Hazuan
Hashim, a filmmaker and video artist, started collaborating
with Phil Maxwell
in 1996 on various visual arts projects. Phil Maxwell is a photojournalist,
filmmaker, visual artist and writer. He has been taking photographs
since the 60’s, and has worked in the East End of London for
the past 30 years. His extensive archive attracts historians, writers
and museums.
Exhibited
all over the world including the Middle East, their work covers documentary
and experimental film. They have collaborated with composers Michael
Nyman, Lola
Perrin, Deirdre
Gribbin and Simon
Rowland-Jones, theatre director Lou
Stein, dancers Mavin
Khoo, Seeta
Patel and Kamala
Devam and painter Alice Sielle.
Recent
projects include a documentary, East End Lives (2009), about characters
and the history of London’s East End and a collaboration with
composer Jack Curtis-Dubowsky, live music to experimental films (including
films by Jean Genet and Derek Jarman) in San Francisco, California.
Both
are currently artists in residence at the Wilton's Music Hall. Current
projects include:
East
End Lives (2010-2014) - a five year commission to document
the changes in the East End of London through the eyes of it's residents.
Mavin Khoo - a feature documentary
looking at the life and work of Mavin Khoo, a world renowned classical
(Bharatanatyam, Ballet) dancer.
From
Cable Street to Brick Lane - a feature documentary examining
the links between the Battle of Cable street and the battle to remove
Fascists from Brick Lane and the surrounding area. It will look at
how different communities have dealt with the poison of racism, anti
Semitism, Islamophobia and fascism in East London.

A 60 min documentary explores the response of artists to the war in
Iraq. Featuring the President of Stop the War Coalition, Tony Benn,
the film was shot in 14 countries including Iraq.

Election
East (2005) – 55 min documentary
‘Election East’ follows the campaign of George Galloway,
his supporters and opponents, in the British General Election 2005.
Taking us to the heart of the campaign trail, the film tracks the
anti war movement and the political landscape of London’s East
End. History, humour and sumptuous photography combine to make this
film into a groundbreaking documentary.
